Development of the UnJammer
Across the water network, a significant number of valves can become inoperable over time — stuck either in the open or closed position. When an emergency shutdown is required, these seized valves often mean isolating much larger sections of the network than necessary. The result is increased customer disruption, extended drain-down times, water quality concerns, and a higher risk of additional leaks once systems are recharged.
To address this, R2M developed the UnJammer — a portable, easy-to-operate device that enables water utilities to free and operate stuck valves without the need for costly specialist intervention. The concept was built around accessibility and practicality, allowing field teams to respond faster and manage shutdowns more efficiently.
Initial prototypes were trialled with Severn Trent Water, whose feedback guided a series of refinements before the final design was rolled out across multiple operational areas. The results were immediate and measurable: Severn Trent’s internal studies reported significant cost savings, reduced shutdown sizes, and a marked improvement in operational flexibility and response time.
The UnJammer exemplifies R2M’s approach to innovation — working side-by-side with water utilities to identify operational challenges and deliver practical, cost-effective solutions that improve performance across the network.
